In recent times, the number of authors who abandon the hope of being published by a publishing house has increased. In some cases, even authors who have not even tried to be published by a publisher dedicate themselves to self-publishing: they simply thought that being independent authors was the right solution. Sending a novel and not getting a response is not enough to get an idea of Italian publishing, nor is having published a book and not being satisfied with the experience with the publisher. A negative result is only one of the possible results we can obtain. It's not enough to come up with a statistic. Despite how much has been written about self-publishing and how many guides there are on independent publishing, I continue to see many authors make the same mistakes. I don't mind anyone who feels called into question by this post: it's just an observation of what I consider to be errors in self-publishing.
Publication of the novel without editing A rereading is not enough to discover what is wrong with our story. Rereading is done to revise the text, but it is not editing. We need the revision of the text because the Special Data first draft of the novel is - or should be - written almost straight away, without thinking about any gaps, unless they are so deep that we are blocked. We, as authors, are too tied to the story to be able to find everything that doesn't work. However much time we can allow to pass before the revision, that remains our story and we will never be able to read it perfectly detached. Above all, an editor is a figure who knows what to find in a story and how to make it work. Although I discussed several points in one of my posts that I disagreed with the editor , that editor pointed out important gaps that I hadn't noticed.
Editing carried out by those who are not editors A strong reader is not an editor, nor are beta readers editors. You can't improvise as an editor and do editing. An editor is known in the editorial environment, he has a site where he presents himself. He has a first name and a last name. In short, an editor is a professional, not another author. I couldn't edit a novel, I could be a beta reader. That's what I'm entitled to, nothing more. Covers, covers, covers! The cover of a book or ebook must be created by a graphic designer, not someone who knows Photoshop. They are 2 different things. I also know Photoshop, but not 100%. However, I am not a graphic designer. If we don't have a lot of money to spend, we can go to Fiverr, where, strange to believe, with just a few dollars you can have beautiful covers created. Hurry to publish Maybe I take it too easy, but I don't have all this rush to publish a novel, despite my advancing age. Haste is the enemy of art, I have written it other times.
